The hubris of most modern songbirds is their reliance on looks—without the pipes to back them up.

The hubris of most modern songbirds is their reliance on looks—without the pipes to back them up. On her self-titled debut, Tiffany Villarreal proves she’s more than just a pretty face. The Raekwon-assisted “Rewind the Time” has a gritty soul quality reminiscent of Mary J. Blige’s “I Love You.” And though the overly exoticized “Fire” and the less than “Erotic” fall short, the Mike City–chopped thumping knocks of “You, Yourself & You” unravel Villarreal’s distinctive, sweet melisma. Though far from perfect, she’s an authentically promising vocalist. And that’s more than the average R&B cutie.
