Being the most prominent Latino rapper down South must be tough. Though his royal crunkness, Lil Jon, christens Pitbull’s debut, M.I.A.M.I., with his trademark sound (“305 Anthem”), then flashes back to ’96-era bass with “Shake It Up,” the aspiring lyricist’s ambitions exceed his talents.

Aside from the memorable “Melting Pot,” featuring Trick Daddy, the Cubano’s lack of depth and caricature like delivery—most egregious on “Dammit Man”— only confirm that he’s just a moderately quick-tongued MC with a love for cash and “Culo.” And it will take more than that to ride with the top dogs.
