Almost 15 years after his Groucho-nose-wearing alter ego Humpty Hump stormed out of Oakland, Shock G drops a uniquely creative solo LP. He combines P-Funk and gangsta rap influences with a serious hip hop side absent from Digital Underground. The results are mostly impressive—like the synth-driven “Holmedown Up,” which features a memorable cameo from Yukmouth, the druginduced hallucination “Cinnamon Waves,” or the harder and more intricate “Keep It Beautiful.” Occasionally, things are thrown off by bizarre tracks like the absurd “We’re All Killaz.” Still, Shock G’s debut establishes him as a bona fide talent, without the gimmick.
