Like a pimp, Xzibit has MTV turning tricks for him.

Like a pimp, Xzibit has MTV turning tricks for him. But at no point while hooking up rides for preppies will he be turned out, as evidenced by his rockhard fifth album, Weapons of Mass Destruction. Over intense tracks by producers like Timbaland and Hi-Tek, X lashes out, gruffly delivering lyrics of fury. On “Ride or Die,” he steers Denaun Porter’s eerie synth right toward the grit of Killa Cali street life. The hard-cracking “Criminal Set” finds X-to-the-Z painting thought-provoking mental pictures of the west side: “Watch the ghetto birds circle above / Reminiscent of dust kicked up, the dirt swept under the rug.” But while he loves his coast, an older and wiser Xzibit sees the bigger picture. On “Cold World,” he ponders the harsh existence of a young Iraqi. X keeps his head up on “Judgment Day,” Khalil’s church-soul standout about surviving the struggle to realize your dreams. He even develops an adult relationship on the sultry “Scent of a Woman.” Brimming with energy and depth, the well-constructed Weapons of Mass Destruction is no fixer-upper.
