Faith Evans - The First Lady (Capitol)

The lady still sings the blues after all this time.

The lady still sings the blues after all this time. Faith Evans, with all her infectious vocal stylings, has yet to sway the R&B world with the weight of say, Sade’s Lovers Rock or Mary J. Blige’s My Life. That’s not to say Evans doesn’t have a great deal to offer the genre with her fourth album, The First Lady. “Jealous,” for instance, shapes up to be a raw and saucy confession in which she bluntly lays her distrust on the line. “Can’t Get Over You,” a sweet, mid-tempo groove, encapsulates the regret of breaking up. The lead single, “Again,” delves into her real-life experiences (including the “case” she caught in ATL), all the while embracing the hard times as learning curves. There’s also no doubt that Evans can still finesse the notes. But instead of continually pushing her sound into the future, she often backtracks, covering much of the same ground as her previous offerings. There’s a glycerin ballad (“True Love”), a mediocre duet (“Ever Wonder,” featuring Mario Winans), and a proposed hit single (“Goin’ Out”)—none of which will change the way you feel about R&B. But the heartache throughout The First Lady gives way to hope that one day, she will.
