Five years between albums would spell a death sentence for most rappers, but not for Black Rob. The raspy-voiced Harlem MC delivers a triumphant punch with
The Black Rob Report, the follow-up to his 1999 P. Diddy-backed platinum debut,
Life Story. In the case of the troubled Mr. “Whoa!,” who’s undergone substance abuse and jail time, the hardships faced during his hiatus humanize
The Black Rob Report. “The kidney, the Hennessey, that fast food, and that E really did me,” Rob admits on the reggae-tinged “Questions.” At the end of the song, he shows resilience, proclaiming: “I ain’t going nowhere.”
Rob is here to stay, as exemplified by ’hood-aimed soundtracks like “B.L.A.C.K.,” produced by Hitman Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie. Other times, fans will be left yearning for more of Rob’s storytelling as heard on the Buckwild-conducted ghetto love tale “How Can I.” It’s a talent vastly underused on The Black Rob Report, and one that could have added an emphatic argument for BR being the heaviest (living) MC on Bad Boy. Still, he makes a comeback that defies critics who counted him out.
