Dwele - Some Kinda... (Virgin)
But his sophomore effort, Some Kinda..., is a display of the Detroit crooner’s distinct Motown soul. “Wake the Baby” features a seductive melody courtesy of saxophonist Boney James, and “I Think I Love U” is a slick stepper groove. Pseudo B-boying (“Keep On,” featuring Slum Village and Common) and tame dance numbers (“Know Your Name”) can spoil Dwele’s dim-lit ambience. Yet his warm tones and heartfelt verses usually restore the romance, proving that he’s capable of continuing in his hometown tradition.
