Lil' Kim - The Naked Truth (Atlantic)

After serving two years as fodder for tabloids and diss records, Lil’ Kim strikes back with The Naked Truth. Here, she retaliates against critics, enemies, and the criminal justice system. With scathing lyricism and infectious beats, Truth validates the Queen Bee’s position as the definitive rap vixen.

Vengeance heats up on the bell-rocking “Spell Check,” where Kim slams the snitches: “I’m more nigga than them bitch-ass guys / ’Cause they took the stand on the DA’s side.”

Indeed, Kim has never lacked the flow, rhyming skill, or bravado of her male counterparts. And she cleverly borrows from a few: from the slick interpolation of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock” (“Lighters Up”) to the brooding “Quiet,” where Kim adopts Eminem’s signature flow to sting her rivals. And as is habitual for Kim, she flips a Notorious B.I.G. quotable to prove a point. On the street-stomping “All Good,” which also samples Biggie’s “Juicy,” she boasts: “Damn right I love the life I live / ’Cause I went from negative to positive.” And with this classic form of payback, it’s all good.
