Keke Wyatt - Emotional Rollercoaster (Cash Money/Universal)

What happens to a diva’s dream deferred? Take Keke Wyatt, who, in 2001, released the satisfying Soul Sista, but then suffered a legal imbroglio for allegedly stabbing her husband. Her name cleared, Wyatt has returned with a resplendent sophomore album, Emotional Rollercoaster.

Rollercoaster is unadulterated by collabos with her new crew. With the exception of one Mannie Fresh–produced track, Keke’s voice alone steals the show with its purity — out-the-shower fresh vocals, nary a forced trill nor straining vibrato. Keke also chooses honesty over hubris, telling gritty but polished love stories. On the Brian Cox–produced “Insecurity,” she admits to feeling threatened by man-stealing groupies while delivering a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony–style melodic fusillade. With the haunting confessional single “Put Your Hands on Me,” she soulfully cautions against domestic abuse.

Yet, after so much drama, Keke seems to come through unscathed, making Emotional Rollercoaster an unexpected comeback album.
