Lil' Flip - I Need Mine (Sony Urban)

Since Lil’ Flip’s last platinum album, U Gotta Feel Me, a new wave of MCs — Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug — have emerged and staked separate claims as Houston’s premier artists. So it’s no surprise that with I Need Mine, Flip spends ample time attempting to reclaim his ranking atop the Houstonian heap. On “Ghetto Mindstate (Can’t Get Away),” a collaboration with Lyfe Jennings that flows with piano-fueled drama, he sneers, “I would sell while y’all wasn’t around / The first week you did alright, but then that shit went down.”

When he’s not reasserting his status, however, Flip sounds bored, spitting obvious, unimaginative lines: “I’m rich, but I don’t like to brag a lot / 45 in my pants, so I sag a lot,” he raps on “Tell Me.” The disc’s ingenious beats make up for Flip’s occasional lack of enthusiasm, from the sizzurp-drenched “Starch & Cleaned” to the foot-stomping single “What It Do,” where producer Mannie Fresh cleverly revisits the anthemic horns of Young Jeezy’s “And Then What.” Despite his somewhat disillusioned tone, I Need Mine’s occasional rap darts ensure that Flip’s game ain’t over just yet.
