He does, however, run over beats with rhythmic (and occasionally arrhythmic) observations on life, love, and fame. In doing so, he cuts deeper than most conventional rappers. Although The Hardestlacks the brilliant conceptual focus of his last effort, A Grand Don’t Come for Free, the Streets’ candid talk about sex with crack-smoking pop stars, the systematic destruction of hotel rooms, and the American propensity to shoot our musicians (and in the case of John Lennon, British ones, too), make for a thoroughly entertaining listen.
