T.I. - King (Grand Hustle/Atlantic)
It’s a warning to everyone— not just fellow rappers from below the Mason-Dixon Line—that T.I.’s reign, which went mainstream with 2004’s platinum Urban Legend, has yet to peak.
His exciting first single, “What You Know,”
bolsters that claim despite sticking to the familiar T.I. formula. (Anthemic chorus? Check. Unrepentant tough talk? Double check.) Equally impressive, though, is when Tip forgoes the usual bragging for shades of vulnerability.
Over expressive keys, T.I. hopes for life after death on “Live in the Sky.” Then he fills the
chorus of the Crystal Waters – sampling “Why You Wanna” with equal parts swagger and hurt, pleading, “In a relationship and faithful to a nigga so wack / Now why you wanna go and do that?”
Sure, King’s occasional lack of originality (“Stand Up Guy”) and sometimes sluggish
wordplay (“My name rings like an alarm in the
street”) could be cited. But that, of course, would only amount to throwing rocks at the throne.
