Da Backwudz - Wood Work (Rowdy)
The Decatur duo combine deft lyricism with evocative samples touching on everything from bitter relationships (“The World Could Be Yours”) to mounting depression (“Whatcha Know ’Bout My Life”). And on “I Don’t Like the Look of It,” Big Marc and Sho-Nuff boastfully toast haters over newcomer Milwaukee Black’s bubbling drums. There are moments, however, when stale dope-boy rhymes creep into otherwise decent selections, breaking the overall feel-good continuity of the LP. But Da Backwudz are wise to never fully fall into that trap.
