Devoid of Nubian-styled anthems, The 5% Album finds the god recycling many of his classic old-time rhymes or rehashing the sect’s philosophies minus original thought. “The Sun” and “Supreme Mathematics,” for example, rely too heavily on that rigid formula. Grand Puba briefly injects passion into the lulling cautionary tale “The Corner, The Streets,” but Jamar comes off more preacher than teacher. Only the Wu-esque “Original Man,” with Raekwon, makes you want to dance to his ministry.
