SA-RA - Black Fuzz (G.O.O.D. Music/Sony Urban Music)

On Black Fuzz the funky trio looks to a seemingly discordant lineup of artists for inspiration—Prince, P-Funk, OutKast, and Afrika Bambaataa, among others—with admirable results. left On “Strawberry Misses” an MPC1200 creates a rapid-fire drum sequence that drives the circuslike beat while rattling tambourines and faint guitar chords add extra texture. Similarly, snare drums and a slow bass open the flirtatious, retro “Nasty You,” with space-age sound effects woven in. The most compelling cut is the sensual “Fantastic Vampere,” featuring Herbie Hancock and Erykah Badu. Hancock’s flair on the keyboards provides a great ’70s feel. SA-RA’s gambles don’t always pay off. The headache-inducing “Big Fame,” seems like a failed attempt at re-creating the hip hop–meets-rock sound of N.E.R.D. And the lyrics, mostly about sex and weed, are shoddy. But the thematic monotony is more than compensated for by the album’s visionary musical mélanges.
