Tanya Stephens - Rebelution (VP Records)
right On her sixth album the street-smart songwriter picks up where 2004’s Gangsta Blues left off. Stephens continues to grapple more with her inner demons than outer pressures. On “These Streets” she struggles with how to love a thug; the slow-burning “Cherry Brandy” depicts her boozing as a crutch to combat loneliness. There are only a few instances of her familiar sociopolitical fervor, but, like all great fighters, she’s got to pick her battles.
