Anything else wouldn’t match the gritty aesthetic the Brooklyn collective (Buckshot, Heltah Skeltah, Smif N Wessun, OGC) is known for and still holds dear.
left But while BCC’s rugged flows are vintage, the audio on their latest is surprisingly New Age. Old reliables Pete Rock and Large Professor contribute, but wunderkinds 9th Wonder, Ill Mind, and Coptic provide most of the dusty, sample-driven grooves that reverberate throughout The Last Stand.
With so many voices craving the mic, though, BCC struggles with cohesion. The group does manage to gel when all are in tune topically. The 9th Wonder–produced “Take a Look (In the Mirror)” finds the crew mulling time; meanwhile, they contemplate mortality on “He Gave His Life.”
Still thriving in a hip hop war game that sees iced-out generals overshadow just-as-talented infantry, BCC holds its ground.
