Van Hunt, "Popular" (Music)

The joys of carnal pleasure loom large.

It doesn’t take a therapist to diagnose what was on Van Hunt’s mind during the recording of his bold, new Popular. The joys of carnal pleasure loom large as the Dayton, Ohio, singer-songwriter-producer dishes layer after layer of pure horniness. There’s the bass-driven “Turn My TV On,” in which our lonely man finds companionship through porno flicks because, “Everyone loves a stranger—nobody wants the danger.” “Prelude (The Dimples On Ur Bottom)” is a witty tale of a threesome with a lesbian couple over a horn-backed throwdown. And on the sparse jungle-drum and chicken-grease guitar romp “The Lowest 1 Of My Desires,” Hunt just gets right to the point: “I wanna fuck you, baby!”

So is the man who parted with Capitol for the more artistic pastures of Blue Note just getting his Dirty Mind on? Not entirely. There are acoustic gems like the heartbreaking “There’s Never A G’Time 2 Say G’Bye,” with melancholy piano chords that recall his soulfully blue “Daredevil, Baby” from 2006’s underrated On The Jungle Floor. Good to know even a freak like Hunt still believes in love.
