While East L.A. singer Ersi Arvizu’s first album in more than 30 years, Friend For Life, comes with the imprimatur of Buena Vista guru Ry Cooder’s production, Arvizu’s rich, husky voice is the real draw. It mercifully never gets lost here, swinging between funk, rock, and ranchera. Decades ago, Arvizu led The Sisters (the Eastside’s answer to the Ronettes) and later fronted Latin rock pioneers El Chicano; this rollicking return is just as essential. At 60, she’s mellowed, but the blazing autobiographical opener “Windows of Dreams” ensures divine immortality.
