Disco ball might be unplugged, but Summer still shines.

On her first studio album in 17 years, Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco, is all over the map—sometimes literally. There are Samba rhythms direct from a hotel lounge (“Drivin’ To Brazil”), ersatz reggae on the title track, and Lite FM meets Delta blues—complete with a cringe-inducing raspy drawl—on “Slide Over Backwards.” But give Donna her due. Whether the material is bland and iffy or melodic and poppy, like the mid-tempo wonder “Science Of Love,” Summer’s vocals are effortless, energetic, passionate. The disco ball might be unplugged, but Summer still shines.
