Stick 2 the Script (Show Off/Brick Records)
As a standard, DJ compilations are unmistakably two things: inflated by marquee-name rappers and unbearably long. DJ Statik Selektah does without the latter, by design and the former, largely, because of his underground appeal, both of which work to his advantage on his solid sophomore album Stick 2 the Script.
In aiming lower, Stick 2 the Script lands farther than its predecessors, mixing famous unknowns like Glasses Malone and Consequence alongside decorated veterans CL Smooth, Jadakiss, and brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli to often surprising results. "Cali Nights", mounted by patient strings, is a jazzy tribute to California (and its female constituents) while "Streets of MA" moves the celebration cross-country to his hometown of Massachusetts. To call this effort scrappy is both a nod to its cross-regional contributors and an explanation for its prevalent scratching heard on most, if not all, songs, a favorite of the DJ.
Effective sampling of Jay-Z's vocals on "Talkin Bout You” is the closest Statik comes to tampering with his low-budget, no-big name formula. Like the title suggests, the disc lives comfortably in its limits, lowering its trajectory to stay closer to its audience.
