The Point of It All (Zomba)
There's been a ghost that has haunted Anthony Hamilton's previous albums: misery. Zealots may find their refuge in Hamilton's heartache, but the North Carolina artist is a bit unguarded this time around. With Hamilton’s fifth album, The Point of It All (La Face), the presence of hope has triumphantly taken lead.
Differing from immediate predecessors, The Point of it All, embraces Hamilton's newfound happiness on tracks like the piano-driven, "Falling In Love". On "Soul's On Fire,” the drums carry out an unfiltered intensity, setting the tone for Hamilton’s story of infidelity where he confesses and prays to be freed of guilt.
Hope dangles from misery on “Hard to Breathe,” as Hamilton deals with issues of seeing an ex-lover’s face in every other woman. And “Her Heart" is Hamilton’s thank you over airy chords to the women who rode with him through troublesome times.
There are no true missteps on this set, although he does veer a bit left with the upbeat, almost cheerful content, but the turn is not aggressive enough to lose the fans following behind him.
The joyful arrangement in The Point of It All enhances Hamilton's storytelling abilities, serving as a lovely mixer to his lyrical depth and sensual, rich voice. All the tools were present and properly used to create this masterpiece.
