The city of Los Angeles is about to become the only defendant in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the relatives of Notorious B.I.G. The family removed two individuals from the suit whom they initially claimed conspired to kill the then 24-year-old rapper, including former officer David A. Mack who has agreed not to sue the family for malicious prosecution in return for his removal, according to The Associated Press. Mack’s college classmate Amir Muhammad (the man accused of being the gunman in the murder) is expected to be dropped from the suit as well when the family files court papers on Monday. The move essentially signals a change in the allegation that police officers planned the killing of B.I.G., and follows a June 3 report by the Los Angeles Times that a paid police informant who told investigators that Marion "Suge" Knight and a police officer orchestrated the killing, later told those investigators that the information was “hearsay.” The suit is scheduled to go to trial on June 23 and seeks unspecified monetary damages. In March, the FBI formally closed its investigation into the rapper’s murder, citing “no basis for prosecution.”
