Ashanti on the Stand

Genard Parker claims he helped Ashanti pursue her career when he signed her in 1997 when she was 16, according to The Associated Press. When the singer signed with a record label, Parker claims, he released her from her contract while making sure he could produce two songs on her first album and receive a $50,000 advance plus royalties.

"She has never paid him," said his lawyer Jasmine Khalili, "and, just as importantly, she has never thanked him." Khalili says that the fact that Ashanti's two albums sold more than 6 million copies means the songstress owes Parker millions of dollars in royalties.

Ashanti's lawyer said Parker only came after her for money after the success of Ashanti's second album. For her part, Ashanti denied that Parker played such a big role in her career, and said that any kind words she may have said about him in a 1997 videotape she made to help secure a recording contract, were was "a little bit of hype... I was excited. I thought i was getting a record deal."
