At an upcoming biennial meeting of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) in Italy, southern correspondent and contributor to magazines like XXL, Scratch and the Source, Jocelyn A. Wilson, will speak about the movement.

During the five-day conference (July 25-30) at the Università La Sapienza in Rome, Wilson will chronicle the evolution of southern hip hop from the early '80s to the present, exploring the origins of Atlanta's hip hop scene from the early days at Atlanta's legendary Jellybeans skating rink to the rise of artists like Outkast, Lil' Jon, Ludacris and T.I.

“Southern hip hop is a hotspot for the hip hop industry,” Wilson said in a statement. “Whether it’s Atlanta’s numerous rappers, Houston’s Swisha House or Louisiana’s Cash Money, everybody is trying to get in on what’s going on down south. Still, southern hip-hop is one of the most misunderstood genres. Therefore, it’s an honor and a necessity to talk truthfully about this culture — especially overseas, where very little is written about southern rap despite its worldwide expansion.”
