King founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in 1968 after her husband's assassination, and passed the role of head of the organization down to her younger son in 1994. In April, she stood up for her husband's work when she spoke out against a bill that would require voters in Georgia to present photo identification at the polls. King has also spoken out against the war in Iraq and said homophobia in the black community must be stopped in order to prevent the spread of AIDS, according to the Times.
