Big Daddy Kane’s recognition at this year’s ceremony is justice due proven by his historical music rap sheet. Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris have been called upon to honor the former Juice Crew member largely known for his hits “Ain’t No Half Steppin’,” “It’s A Big Daddy Thing,” “Smooth Operater,” “I Get the Job Done” and the now classic “Raw,” which he is slated to perform with Common, T.I., The Roots and one of his original collaborators Biz Markie. Known at large for his superior lyrical aptitude, Kane at times was also noted as a lady’s man and with charming good looks. The innovative Brooklyn born MC would later go on to cameo in projects with Madonna including a book titled Sex.
For the VH1 honor he joins forces with the new blood of rap in an almost symbolic passing of ‘the torch’ for Kane. Moments such as this for Kane are more like quismit than consequence. When asked who he’s most impressed by in rap Kane praises Ludacris, Method Man, Busta Rhymes and especially Common for their innovation and expansion of rap music.
Kane has professed that he doesn’t have any plans to record any future solo albums but looks forward to the release of his upcoming features on projects by Foxy Brown and Kay Slay. His professional agenda will include music but his focus is film, having just completed the soon to be released Dead Heist.
He admits he is most honored to be acknowledged along side Notorious B.I.G. “I think it’s beautiful what they are doing for B.I.G. It’s well deserved. He was a talented brother who didn’t really get to show the world all of his talents.”
The significance of Notorious B.I.G.’s recognition is also significant for Kane when he considers the true pioneers of rap like Kurtis Blow, Cold Crush Brothers and others like himself have always kept rivalries contained to lyrical battles. “We would battle each other on stage and then take the train home together. Battles date back to the origins of hip hop. They can be competitive. They just don’t have be a contact sport.”
Cold Crush Brothers and Roxanne Shante are among Kane’s personal nominations as honorees for next year’s ceremony.
VH1 Hip Hop Honors air on September 26th.
