Performing last week at New York’s renowned S.O.B’s, Dwele put on a sexy and soulful concert and shared with fans the importance of his long overdue sophomore album, Some Kinda.
VIBE.COM: Some Kinda, the sophomore album released under Virgin Records, how did you come up with the name?
right Dwele: I wanted to put focus on that song “Some Kinda,” the song on the album that meant the most to me. I had a chance to write about my family and showcase my younger brother. I wanted to put focus on the song by naming the album Some Kinda. I’m urging people to find out what their purpose is on earth and what they have been blessed with. My “Some Kinda” is music. [For] others, it could be dance, art or poetry.
Growing up on the Westside of Detroit, what was life like?
Honestly it wasn’t the best and it wasn’t the worst. Life was good and my parents made the best of it. They kept good music playing in the house. My ears were always tuned into Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, Miles Davis, Coltrane and all those cats. Those are the people that influenced my music. My parents raised me on soul and jazz music. Then I got into hip hop around high school and wanted to become a rapper. You never know where your path may lead.
In comparison, what are the similarities and differences between Subject (his 2003 debut album) and Some Kinda?
I had the chance to put my personality into Some Kinda, even though I did the same for Subject. I showed off my crazy side with some of the interludes that you will hear on the album. I played the fugal horn and the trumpet, which gave some of the songs a jazzier feel and some more of a funk feel. I’ve made some adjustments as a musician.
After listening to the album, “Old Lovas,” “Flapjacks,” “I Think I Love U,” and “A Pimp’s Dream” are my personal favorites. What do you want your fans to gain from Some Kinda?
I want to make that perfect background music. I want perfect music for every occasion. I want people to look back 15-20 years from now and think back to a good time in their life and remember their favorite song.
What are your plans for the future?
I have a couple things lined up. You will see me on the silver screen pretty soon, on some super rock star ‘ish.
