It hardly seems like news, since most ballplayers moonlight in the music industry (ie. Shaq, Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Kobe Bryant, Deion Sanders, and the list goes on). And Terry agrees. "There's a prevailing stereotype of athletes crossing over into the music industry and failing," he said. But the 6’2’ guard says he’s been closely watching hip hop’s success stories.
The Arizona-native was mentored on the music business early on in his basketball career by Master P (Limit Records) and Jermaine Dupri (VP of Urban Music at Virgin Records), while he was playing for the Atlanta Hawks. His court-skills took him from Atlanta to join the Dallas Mavericks. However, the dream of having a label was temporarily put on hold when two of the group members were incarcerated for separate crimes. Terry felt that his label would be the perfect way to showcase their talent once they were released.
Tha Reason Records’s first release will be West Koasta Nostra, featuring four former gang members of varying affiliations from Seattle and Tucson, AZ. The members - Gangsta Nutt, Rob Rollie, Dirty O (Terry's brother), and Blue the Vet have made peace and seamlessly meshed to form a hip hop group.
"We are going to succeed, because I am very hands on with all of my projects. I executive produced 90 percent of the [West Koasta Nostra] album and will be overseeing all of the marketing and promotion."
Tha Reason Records scheduled to release a mixtape with DJ Drama in September, as well as Nostra's first single, "What It Is," featuring David Banner. The album project, The Shakedown, has guest appearances from Bone Crusher, Da Brat, Yukmouth, Kurupt, Bun B and Jazze Pha.
In addition, the group will be featured in the November issue of Smack DVD magazine, with a video for "Mad Azz" featuring Bone Crusher.
