The ticket stub to Power 105.1’s Powerhouse 2005: Operation Takeover (ie Jay’s “I Declare War”) concert is one to put in hip hop’s time capsule.
right The beef between Jay-Z and Nas, which was once feared to have fatal repercussions, has been officially buried. Thursday night at New Jersey’s Continental Airlines Arena, Nasir joined Jay-Z on stage with a host of other surprise guest appearances.
Apparently the show was reminiscent of Jay-Z’s Madison Square Garden Fade to Black concert. After Jay-Z’s act he brought on his “friends,” T.I. , Young Jeezy, Kanye West, Paul Wall, Diddy, a shocking appearance by D-Block and surprise, surprise former Roc-A-Fella Beanie Sigel. Many have speculated that their bond had been broken after Damon Dash and Jay’s business marriage split and Sigel stayed with Dash.
Beyond watching Jay-Z rock a show after retirement, after changing lanes from drug-dealer to head music-dealer of Def Jam; his union with Nas was unexpected and unconventional for hip hop. Rumors were flying out of control before the concert date approached. Everyone wondered, ‘Who will Jay-Z declare war against?’
50 Cent, Cam’ron, Juelz Santana and The Game were on the top of the list for potential targets. Yet, Jay shocked them all when Nas surfaced from an elevator on stage reciting the hook to “Dead Presidents,” from Jigga’s classic release, Reasonable Doubt.
With Jay-Z and Nas no longer at odds, what does this mean for hip hop? Click here to comment.
