Jay-Z Signs UK Grime Queen, Lady Sovereign

right The 19-year-old UK grime queen caught Jay's eye when he saw her at a New York show. According to BallerStatus.net, he signed her on the spot.

"We spoke for a little bit, then he asked me to do some lyrics," she told the site. "I was like 'Aarrgh!' That just freaked me out, but it was cool."

Sovereign's debut album, tentatively titled Public Warning, is scheduled for a spring 2006 release. If you can't wait until then to get a taste of grime - a subgenre of Britain's underground garage hip hop scene that also features a touch of drum 'n' bass and a bit of punk - check out Sovereign's debut EP, Vertically Challenged, recently released in the U.S. on Chocolate Industries.
