Co-owner Raymond "Benzino" Scott was fined by the U.S. attorney's office in Massachusetts for failing to file a tax return on an income of $1.5 million in 1999 and 2000, according to The Boston Herald.

right "There was an extensive investigation into this matter," FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz told the Herald. "We took a sweeping look at this individual. We were aware of the allegations of murder and everything else. This is what we came up with."

On October 28, Benzino pleaded innocent to willful failure to file tax returns before a U.S. District Court Magistrate in Boston, and was freed on $10,000 unsecured bond. Marcinkiewicz refused to comment further on whether Benzino's charges are part of a larger investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice into the hip hop industry, though a source for the FBI did say the investigation included a probe into Benzino's alleged gang ties.

Benzino is also facing civil suits from The Source's creditors and federal suits from female staffers who have made sexual harassment charges.

Meanwhile, a new hip hop blog is kicking The Source when it's down. The newly-launched "The Bible of Hip Hop" (www.TheBibleOfHipHop.com) is not only referencing the magazine's slogan as its title, but its two top stories on Monday were about stories related to The Source: Benzino's alleged tax evasion and the Village Voice's cover story on the source in which the writer calls Benzino the "spousal abuse poster boy."

The newly-launched blog said of its name: "Over the last ten years, many publications on the West Coast and East Coast have laid claim to the moniker "the bible of hip hop," but time has shown that these places don't meet the passionate conviction to truth associated with such a nick name. We thought it was time to step up and own the title, and make it valid. (By valid we mean, the domain name was available)."
