The Emancipation of Mimi, boosted by Carey's eight Grammy nominations, sold 290,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 25, according to figures released Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan. The album now totals 4.86 million copies sold this year, compared to 4.83 million for 50's The Massacre. Massacre was released in March, while Mimi was released in April.
Carey's single "Don't Forget About Us" put her back on top of the Billboard's Hot 100 chart, landing her next to Elvis Presley for second place among those with the most No. 1 singles in the rock era. Her 17 hits are second only to the Beatles, who had 20.
The R&B Diva has also taken home numerous awards this year, nabbing five Billboard Music Awards, four Vibe Awards, two Soul Train Lady Of Soul Awards, and one American Music Award. She ties with Kanye West and John Legend for most Grammy nominations, while 50 Cent only received six nods.
She's completely turned her career around and made an earnest comeback. In 2001 she was hospitalized twice due to emotional and physical stress. And just three years ago EMI paid Carey nearly $30 million to buy out her $80 million contract in January 2002 after the commercial flop of Glitter, the soundtrack to her film debut and her first release from EMI's Virgin Records.
Afterward Carey signed to Universal Music's Island Def Jam label, releasing the lackluster Charmbracelet. But her 14th album, Mimi, with contributions from Jermaine Dupri on three of the album's top tracks -- "It's Like That," "We Belong Together," and "Shake It Off" -- it's been a grand year for the multi-octave singer.
