Reuters, the $1.1 million dollar penalty will go to pay legal costs incurred by the Wallace family in its wrongful death mistrial.
The payment was approved because of errors in a civil wrongful death trial over accusations that
Christopher Wallace was murdered by crooked police officers.
A U.S. district judge accused police of concealing evidence, but the case was declared a mistrial last year.
Voletta Wallace, the mother of the Notorious B.I.G, intends to go ahead with its wrongful death lawsuit and hopes to set a new trial date in April.
The Notorious B.I.G. was brutally shot dead at the age of 24 in 1997 in Los Angeles.
