left Mayor Bloomberg was joined by Ice-T and hip hop business mogul
Russell Simmons yesterday (March 30) at
City Hall to announce Hip Hop Week.
“Welcome to
City Hall, or my crib, as I like to call it,” said Bloomberg to laughter at Thursday’s press conference.
Bloomberg and company announced that New York City will once again host
VH1’s Hip Hop Honors ceremony, the centerpiece of the city’s
Hip Hop Week, which will take place from Oct. 12 – Oct. 17.
The actual
Hip Hop Honors show, which is scheduled for Oct. 7 at the
Hammerstein Ballroom with an air date of Oct. 17, will have Ice-T as its host.
“My people said Bloomberg’s cool,” said Ice-T, later at the press conference. “On the street, I think that’s the highest accolade he could ever achieve. When we showed up and I met him, I felt it too. You can feel it when you touch a playa’s hand.”
In addition to
VH1’s Hip Hop Honors ceremony the
Hip Hop Week in New York City will also include cultural, fashion, sports, culinary and educational activities.
