The (Greensboro, N.C.) News-Record recently reported that Salisbury created a class entitled,
Hip-Hop: Culture, Economics and Politics as part of UNCG’s
African American Studies program.
Salisbury and her class carefully examine and talk about not only the music, but heated topics within the genre like materialism, sexism, homophobia and violence. One particular subject her class has discussed has been the portrayal of women.
Salisbury, a Los Angeles native and fan of Run- D.M.C., feels fortunate to have the opportunity to run a free-flowing discussion in her
Hip-Hop: Culture, Economics and Politics class.
"I'm a hip-hop generation kid," Salisbury told
The News & Record. "It affects everything I do - the way I dress, the way I talk, the way I teach. So when I came to UNCG to get my doctorate [in socio-historical aspects of sport], I knew I wanted to do something with that. I was just blessed that they were willing to let me give it a try in the
African American Studies program."
