The decision to cancel the concert came after students at the school won the right to have Ne-Yo perform for them by coming in first in a seat-belt use contest. School administrators still felt the need to pull the plug on Wednesday afternoon’s (May 10) concert after the lyrics on Ne-Yo’s album were deemed to be objectionable. The students, who were all really looking forward to the concert, weren’t pleased by the cancellation. “It’s unfair what they’re doing,” Alexandra Reeder, a 15-year-old ninth-grader told the Detroit Free Press. right Still, Mercy High School Principal Carolyn Witte, felt the decision was justified and in the best interests of the students. “The bottom line is I have to make decisions based on what I think is going to be in line with what we are, what we teach, and how we’ve dialogued with students,” Witte told The Associated Press.
