On Tuesday (May 23) attorney
Mel Sachs told a jury in
U.S. District Court in Manhattan that Ludacris and West stole the lyrics and beat of 2003’s “Stand Up” from a New Jersey company.
Sachs compared Luda’s “Stand Up” to “Straight Like That,” a song produced by the East Orange, New Jersey group
I.O.F.. He played snippets of the song in court, with the hopes of influencing the jury that the rappers should be held accountable.
right Furthermore Sachs pointed out that the words “like that” are repeated more than 80 times in each song. However in “Stand Up” Luda says “just like that,” while it’s “straight like that” in the other song.
Christine Lepera, an attorney for the rappers and
EMI April Music Inc., strongly denied Sachs’ allegations.
“The first time they ever heard of the song ‘Straight Like That’ was when this lawsuit was filed,” Lepera told
The Associated Press about Ludacris and West.
Still, the trial is expected to last a week. If liability is found, damages will be determined.
