Def Jam Grabs J. Period to Assemble Greatest of The Roots Mixtape

“Def Jam brought me in to do the Isley Brothers mixtape. Now they commissioned me to do a promo CD for The Roots album,” an excited J. Period told Vibe.com. “It’s going to be like the Best of The Roots, like I did with Nas and The Best of Lauryn Hill and it’s going to have more and more involvement with the artists. Black Thought laid down some exclusive stuff and I’m going down to Philly to work with ?uestlove. right J. Period hopes to have The Roots mixtape finished by next Wednesday (July 19), with a tentative release to follow in the last week of the month. The Roots Game Theory album is scheduled for an Aug. 29 release on Def Jam.

The talented J. Period revealed that upon hearing the comprehensive Hill mixtape, ?uestlove promised him only “exclusive sh*t,” as the renowned drummer wanted The Roots compilation to be the best yet. In related news, the July 4 release of J. Period’s, Official Kevin Powell for Congress Mixtape, Powell For The People Vol. 1: It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop was pushed back indefinitely, as Powell decided to postpone his own run for congress. Meanwhile, in addition to The Roots mixtape, J. Period is prepping releases for his compilations with CL Smooth and Talib Kweli.
