Black Ty is the rap persona of the singer-actor currently known as Tyrese Gibson. "The temperature of hip hop was a direct invitation for me. The time is now", Tyrese said during a press conference in which he introduced his rap guise.
Fans and friends of the singer/rapper/actor including
Tamala Jones,
Paul Pierce and
Brandy packed into the
Highlands in Hollywood to celebrate the "new" artist and his upcoming double album,
Alter Ego, dropping in October.
One side is strictly R&B and the other is a rap album by Black Ty featuring some of the biggest rappers in the game, including
Snoop,
The Game and
Chingy. "I love it, I’m on the album" said
BET’s 106 & Park co-host,
Tigga, "We have three songs. You have to look past him being Tyrese and listen to the songs. The kid is talented."
right Tyrese, who also runs a his own label,
Headquarter Entertainment, opened the show with a performance by
Glenn Lewis ("Don’t You Forget It") and new girl group
Dyme. Then, Tyrese started off his set with his classic joints "What’chu Like" and "Baby Boy." Then Black Ty performed his new rap joints, which featured the
Lady of Rage of "Afro Puff" fame culminating with Chingy’s new single "Pullin’ Me Back".
Tyrese er, Black Ty also launched his mixtape,
Black Ty: Best of Both Hoods featuring
50 Cent, Snoop,
Ludacris, Chingy, The Game, Lady of Rage and
YoYo and celebrated the release of his new film,
Waist Deep, which opened last week.
Despite the constant sound problems, Black Ty’s first performance as a rapper proved successful as the crowd bounced to his flow. No one is more aware of his R&B image tainting his rap credibility than Tyrese himself. "I’m God built. I’m ready for whatever’s on my way. So Black Ty is here to stay."
