After receiving an incredible audience reaction from its up-close, unique commercial with Jay-Z, HP decided to call on Williams to continue its Computer is Personal Again ad campaign for the HP Pavilion line of entertainment notebooks. Just like Hov’s HP commercial, Williams’ spot was shot from his shoulders to his waist, as Skateboard P explains how he gets personal on his HP Pavilion entertainment notebook via his hands. While Hov’s spot may have been more regal in a sense, P’s commercial is more carefree, but yet entrepreneurial at the same time. “I’m way into the whole retro gaming thing. I mean it takes me back to being a kid in Virginia Beach,” says Williams, who uses his hands as paddles to play the classic video game, Pong, before throwing up his traditional Star Trak sign. “I have my own pro skate team. I have photos of all these guys in here.”

When Williams mentions his skate team, he bends his arm downward and diagonally, while a skater speeds down an animated rail appearing on his arm. In his spot, Williams also reveals that he “emails sketches halfway around the world” to work with his business partner Nigo in Japan. Nigo is the creator of the appealing A Bathing Ape clothing line. During the spot P also claims to be able to see music and reveals that he likes to keep a scrapbook in his notebook, with all the visual images that he loves. Later, P throws on his multi-colored chain with an animated character resembling himself and a “Williams” nameplate, before exclaiming his famous catchphrase “Yessir” to end the commercial. HP began its signature series of Pavilion commercials (shot from the shoulders to waist) for the Computer is Personal Again campaign with U.S. Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Shaun White. From there, HP rolled out with its spot featuring Def Jam President Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z. David Roman, HP’s Vice President of marketing communications, Personal Systems Group, believes that the success of the company’s first two spots led the way for subsequent Pavilion ads featuring Williams, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and reality television king creator Mark Burnett, who’s responsible for hit shows like Survivor and The Contender. After featuring Jay-Z, Roman was more than delighted to have another hip hop icon represent the Pavilion notebook. right “Williams is such a unique, intriguing figure in hip hop, pop culture. Just like Jay-Z he has so many things going on and his personality came out great in the ad,” Roman exclusively told Vibe.com. In addition to today’s (July 24) premiere of Williams’s HP ad, this week is bound to be a busy one for the Virginia native. This afternoon, Skateboard P will roll onto the set MTV’s TRL to promote his new album In My Mind, which drops Tuesday (July 25) on Star Trak/Interscope. On Tuesday, Williams will also appear on BET’s 106 & Park. Then on Wednesday (July 26), P will be on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, followed by an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday (July 28). Williams was also recently tapped to be the face of Louis Vuitton’s 2006 and 2007 line of Italian suitcases and bags.
