According to The Associated Press, Robert Tur, the owner of the Los Angeles News Service, filed suit against YouTube, Inc. last Friday (July 14) for copyright infringement. right In his suit, Tur charges that YouTube encourages copyright infringement by hosting footage from users who have not even bothered to secure clearances from the videos’ rightful owners. Tur’s lawsuit is the first ever copyright suit filed against YouTube, an outlet for video clips. Various media reports believe if Tur is successful with his lawsuit against YouTube, than it may possibly open the door for similar suits against the site. Currently YouTube prohibits users from uploading copyrighted material that hasn’t been granted its rightful permission. The site also removes videos that violate that regulation. Since its inception YouTube has become a hub for videos of all kind, including hip hop, by encouraging users to broadcast themselves. As of today (July 20) a simple search of “hip hop” results in 21,179 video clips.
