DJ DangerMouse Credited For Mashup Craze, VIBE Editor Speaks On Phenomenon

"Mash-ups are vocals of one song laid over instrumentals of another song," Caramanica explained. The news report credited DJ Dangermouse as the most famous mash-up artist. "Dangermouse had a little spark of inspiration," said Caramanica, "He said White Album: Beatles, Black Album: Jay-Z, he added a little color theory, came up with the Gray Album," which seems to have sparked all sorts of other mash ups. ABC news used the example of VHI's tv show Best Week Ever's combination of Oprah's confrontational interview with author James Frey and the infamous couch jumping Tom Cruise. They also mentioned a website that matches up google maps with personal blogs to make "useful tour guides," proving that mash-ups are no longer living in just music. "What you are seeing with technology right now are probably a lot of kids who understand the sampling idea but maybe don't want to make music, or maybe don't know how to make music," added Caramanica.
