The 2006 MTV VMA Nominees
Justin Timberlake, who last graced the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in 2003 with a win for “Cry Me A River,” will likely deflower the ceremony’s 2006 stage with the debut performance of “Sexyback,” offering himself up as eye candy for the female minority vying for a moon man this year.
Shakira, leading the pack with seven nominations for “Hips Don’t Lie”, will compete for video of the year along with Madonna (“Hung Up”) and Christina Aguilera (“Ain’t No Other Man.”)
right Meanwhile Aguilera will battle it out in all of her vintage jazz doll brawn for best female video against nominees including Kelly Clarkson (“Because Of You,”) and Nelly Furtado (“Promiscuous.”)
At some point in the show, Beyonce Knowles will perform “Ring the Alarm,” the second single off her sophomore LP, B-Day, set to hit stores in September. The Grammy award-winning singer is nominated for best R&B video with the single “Check On It” from The Pink Panther soundtrack.
Her contenders in the category include Mariah Carey (“Shake it off”), Mary J. Blige (“Be Without You”), Jamie Foxx (“Unpredictable”) and Chris Brown (“Yo [Excuse Me Miss]”)
And now that we’ve reintroduced the boys, our money’s on Gnarls Barkley, nominated for best group video in honor of their psychotherapeutic inkblot test, “Crazy.” Also nominated in the category are The Red Hot Chili Peppers with “Dani California.” The band shared this year’s pinnacle of seven nominations with Shakira and is also up for video of the year.
Best male video nods go to T.I. (“What You Know”), Nick Lachey (“What’s Left Of Me”), James Blunt (“You’re Beautiful”), Kanye West (“Gold Digger”) and Busta Rhymes (“Touch It” remix featuring Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliott.)
The VMAs will air live from Radio City Music Hall in New York at 8 p.m. (EDT) on Aug. 31st.
