On September 30, the HSAN will host The Los Angeles Hip Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment at the University of Southern California. Participants will include actors Nick Cannon and Taraji Henson, artists Snoop Dogg and Too Short, NBA star Lamar Odom and Congressman Maxine Waters (D-CA). HSAN President/CEO Benjamin Chavis will also be in attendance.
The September 30 summit is a continuation of the “Get Your Money Right” tour, which provides information on maintaining financial stability. Topics like home ownership, understanding credit and credit scores, basic banking and entrepreneurship will be covered. Those in attendance will also receive the “Get Your Money Right” workbook, which can be downloaded at www.hsan.org.
right William Jones, a vice president at Chrysler Financial and summit panelist, feels it is imperative that young people know the things that will be presented during this session.
"With rising tuition costs, the cost of books, gasoline etc. young people can't afford not to have financial know-how," Jones says.
Chavis hopes to use the resurgent popularity of West Coast rap to spread the gospel of financial empowerment.
"Hip hop on the West Coast is as strong as ever," emphasized Dr. Chavis. "The Los Angeles Hip Hop summit focuses on the opportunities to better understand the importance of financial literacy and empowerment. We will celebrate all of the good work being done throughout the city by many grass roots organizations, as well as pay tribute to the growth and expansion of hip hop culture throughout Los Angeles."
In October, the “Get Your Money Right” tour will make its final stops in Dallas and Toronto.
