“I just give my heart out on the mic, and I really look at this as ‘no one has ever heard Black-Ty
rhyme in the masses,” Tyrese, 27, told Vibe.com exclusively. “This is their shot at hearing me, and
they can get it before the actual album comes.”
Black-Ty, (born Tyrese Gibson), came to life in 2005 with the release of the “Best of Both Worlds” hip-hop mixtape which found the singer rhyming hard core verses instead of singing love songs to the ladies.
“I’m the same person, but Black-Ty can say shit that Tyrese can never get away with as a singer,”
Tyrese says. “My image as a singer is a lot more edgy and safe, and Black-Ty just takes off…he just goes.”
left The 21-track mixtape features Black-Ty rhyming alongside Memphis Bleek, Cassidy, Stevie Wonder, Eric Sermon and Kurupt, among others.
“I look at this as a way to satisfy people’s curiosity,” Tyrese says, who also stated that he’s
been rapping longer than he’s been singing. “Here’s my way of really showing people some of the
things I’m capable of before my actual album comes out.”
The hip-hop mixtape serves as the prequel to Tyrese’s upcoming album “Alter Ego.” The double-disk, scheduled for release in December on J Records, is a display of both R&B singing on one side of the album and Black-Ty’s hardcore rhyming skills on the other. The album will feature collaborations from Method Man, Mannie Fresh, Kurupt, Snoop, and Too Short, with production for Scott Storch and Lil’ Jon.
“At the end of the day, people are saying ‘I’m used to you doing one thing.’ You can’t really base
what you’re looking to do with your life on anybody else’s opinion,” he says. “You just got to go
out there and make shit happen.”
