"Lyte has been involved in the [honors] program every year whether she’s presenting or making her presence felt on the red carpet, “said founding board members, Michaela Angela-Davis. “She‘s such a homegirl; she‘s so great, and so we wanted to honor her.”
right Founded by hip hop DJ Beverly Bond, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. was primarily set up to be a mentoring program to help young black women interested in careers in music obtain the skills and guidance necessary to be successful in the business.
"We’re giving the young girls examples of women who have worked in the industry as well as helping them construct a healthy and professional self-esteem, so they can get in and realize that there are other jobs aside from being a booty girl," added Davis.
In addition to honoring female MCs, BGRI has partnered up with the DJ Scratch Academy and has developed a program that will allow girls to learn how to scratch and make beats.
“We’re just getting started,” concluded Davis, “and hopefully we will build across the country with other black women in the industry-because mentoring is the key that crosses people over.”
