The "Overweight Lover" filed a suit in Manhattan Supreme Court against National Union Fire Insurance Co., and is seeking reimbursement for money he paid to people who sued him after a stampede that killed nine people and injured 29 during a celebrity basketball game at City College, reports the New York Daily News.
right The lawsuit accuses the Pittsburgh company of holding out on a $1 million insurance policy that Heavy D - whose real name is Dwighyt Myers - purchased in 1989, and seeks for payback for legal fees incurred by the rapper, whose hits include "Now That We've Found Love" and "Nuttin' But Love."
The fatal stampede occurred at CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium on Dec. 28 1991 when over 5,000 tickets were sold to a celebrity hoops benefit organized by Heavy D and Sean Diddy Combs, though the gym's capacity was only 2,730.
When angry ticketholders where locked out, they charged the gym's doors, causing a panic inside that trapped dozens of people in a surging crowd.
In 1999, the two rappers, along with the school, were found negligent for the stampede.
Heavy D's attorney, Paul Martin said that over the years, the rapper has paid $791,899 in damages to the victims of the stampede. "He just wants to move on with his life and make beautiful music," Martin concluded.
