Chanting over a Don Corleone–produced one-drop riddim called “Seasons,” Sean Paul delivers a moving tribute to friends and loved ones who’ve passed away.
right "Daddigon is the man who basically start the Dutty Cup Crew," explained Sean Paul during an exclusive Vibe interview, referencing his friend that was killed in Kingston while he was recording this album. "He was one of my best friends in the first three or four years of my career. He was a very original, creative person… it’s something that I will miss."
Along with Daddigon, Sean Paul also mentions others like Bogle - the legendary Jamaican streeet dancer and choreographer who was murdered in June 2005 - who's deaths have left impact on his life and career, and who are memorialized in the track as well.
"I mention Bogle name. I mention Peter Cargill, who was a great footballer that crashed the other day. And Shorty Malcolm who was a footballer too and crash a couple years ago," says Paul. "And another sister named Nicole. She’s one of my first girlfriends, and she died in about 1990."
The video to "Never Gonna Be The Same" was released in Europe, but has not been seen on any major media outlets in America until now. Without further ado, VIBE Media Group brings you Sean Paul’s latest video:
"It’s not gonna be the same without them," concludes Sean Paul, "Because without Daddigon freestyling about 'Dutty Cup' we wouldn’t have the name Dutty Cup. I wouldn’t have named my album Dutty Rock. I wouldn’t have said 'Dutty Yeah.' This was way back in ’94. And if he had freestyled some other shit, I don’t know what would have come… That why I have to highlight the man’s legacy. We owe that to people like that, cause they help make us who we are."
