"The site’s aim is to be the most technologically advanced urban website,” says founder Chuck
Wilson. “We want to use and apply this technology to all the things going on in urban
entertainment, and for the most part, people have already started catching on to it.”
The newly-created urban website has been described as a hybrid of Myspace, YouTube and an
iTunes-like download store geared toward a younger, more urban demographic.
Wilson, who feels there was an urgent need to create a social networking and music video site that
catered to the urban population, hopes the
site is revolutionary in terms of the way people congregate around urban entertainment.
right “I hope we are able to use the technology to enhance what is happening in the physical world as far
as both movies and music,” Wilson says. “We’re so unique because our site allows people to sell
music, icons and wallpapers if they own them, and become entrepreneurs. They can do this not only
on Crackspace, but anywhere on the web...we’re empowering people.”
Despite its innovative creation, some people are not so excited about the website and maintain that
it is degrading, claiming that the name of the website is more negative and will dissuade people
from using the site.
Wilson admits he knew people would become skeptical, but claims the word “crack” resonates with those within the hip hop community.
“More often than not, those people complaining are on the periphery of the culture,” Wilson says.
“I named it ‘CrackSpace’ because I knew it was a name people were gonna talk about. Crack in hip hop has become a metaphor for anything that’s addictive and really hot."
The creators of the site are currently working on mobile deals to allow users to visit their pages
and enjoy its features via their cell phones.
